Vintage Cap Classique, as GM&AHRENS is classified, is fairly rare in SA as it requires that only the best grapes from an excellent vintage are selected and aged for a minimum of three years. In a bad year no-one in Champagne makes vintage bubbly and we would certainly follow suit if faced with a poor vintage. Fortunately, the Cape climes have bestowed enough sunshine on our vines, always ensuring ample access to excellent vintage-quality produce.

Our grapes are harvested from 13 different wine pockets in the Western Cape, with our base wine from every pocket being matured and fermented separately in imported French Oak barrels for 11 months, at our production cellar outside Paarl. The assemblage and bottling follow, after which our wine is transferred to the maturation cellar in the beautiful village of Franschhoek, for secondary fermentation and maturation for another three to four years. This painstaking method is the same way premium Champagnes such as Krug and Salon are made, and have delighted their makers as each vintage is uncorked for the first time.

It is at this very cellar in Franschhoek, where we house up to 30 000 vintage bottles, that we welcome our bubbly friends to private tastings by appointment, and where we would love to host you at our very festive annual Disgorgement and Spring Parties.

Vintage Cuvée Cap Classique

Our first vintage cuvee was released with flair and lots of hot air on 1 September 2011 in a gigantic hot air balloon in the main road of Franschhoek, a first in the history of the town.

The House of GM&AHRENS Vintage Cuvée Cap Classique uses the traditional French blending partnership of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes as its base, the exact blend being vintage-dependant. Our Vintage Cuvée spends one year in barrels gaining breadth and richness before bottling and 35 months lees maturation, resulting in a classically styled, creamy bubbly.

Dosage is minimal resulting in a fresh, bone dry bubbly that is classy and understated.
Our untraditional serving suggestion recommends pouring our sparkler into Burgundy wine glasses, the mousse and the wine behind the bubble come into balance, dramatically increasing food compatibility.

Cuvée Agrandi

Launched at the 2016 SA Style Awards, the House of GM&AHRENS Cuvée Agrandi might be referred to as our second label, but it is certainly a showstopper. The Cuvée Agrandi is a limited edition six-year matured Vintage Cap Classique, a classic blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

Bottling takes place after a year of classic Champagne-style barrel fermentation & maturation, disgorgement five years later. The Cuvée Agrandi’s uniqueness does not end with the exquisite content; each of our Cuvée Agrandi bottles is a one-of-a-kind piece of beaded art, proudly designed and ‘painted’ with beads by a handful of artists in Kwazulu Natal under the Ubuhle Beads brand.
